Lab Mission

The brain is a formidable computing device, outperforming our smartest algorithms in flexibility and efficiency. Understanding its key principles will enable both fundamental insights, novel treatments and technological applications.

In the lab we try to discover some of these principles using a combination of computational and neurophysiological tools. Specifically we are interested in developing and applying advanced analysis to complex, real-world conditions using various machine learning tools.

We have three main research lines:

  • Processing of sounds in the auditory system, which we research by collecting neural population recordings from behaving mice via electrophysiology (NeuroPixel 2.0, up to 768 El.) and Ca-imaging (GCaMP8m, 2-photon and widefield) while modulating the neural activity using optogenetics.
  • Acoustic communication during social interaction, which we study in mice by precisely tracking their vocalizations during courtship and other interactions. We are world-wide leaders in audiovisual tracking and precise assignment of vocalizations to emitters, using our HyVL and UltraEx systems.
  • Brain-wide dynamics of neural activity, where we study light-sheet recordings from awake behaving zebrafish in collaboration with the Ahrens lab (Janelia Research Campus, HHMI, USA).
